Kunst ist Klasse! That’s the vibe at Viktor-Christ-Gasse Middle School
The latest edition of the community music series GRÄTZL TÖNE showed how art can enrich everyday school life. On June 18, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Viktor-Christ-Gasse Middle School in Vienna’s 5th district was transformed into a lively place of music and encounter.
A celebration for the whole neighborhood – free admission!
Thuesday, 18. June 2025
15:00 pm – 18:00 pm
Viktor-Christ-Gasse 24, 1050 Wien

Over several weeks, the students created musical works in workshops – from sound experiments to joint performances with professional musicians.
“We held a total of 42 workshops together with artists and students from the music university,” says project manager Martin Schlögl. “The sound will be coming from every corner of the school.”

The first workshop with the Modular Table was on May 14, 2025. More will follow … until the presentation on June 18, 2025, at 3 p.m. Come and listen! -> Middle School, Viktor Christ Gasse, Vienna
Here are the first experiments and rehearsals with the Modular Table by:
Mo, Ulyana, Faris, and Jasin

The focus is on cultural participation and strengthening students’ self-efficacy—because in everyday school life, their creative potential often remains hidden. The project creates space for expression, encounter, and new perspectives—for students, artists, and the audience alike.
Students and artists on equal footing
In close collaboration with artists such as Tonica Hunter, Maiken Beer, Gammon, Flip Philipp, Linda Basquel, Markus W. Schneider, musicians from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Ensemble Studio Dan, and students from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), the students developed their own pieces of music, sound installations, and performances. In small groups, they built their own instruments, experimented with materials, and explored musical forms of expression. In doing so, they moved freely between avant-garde approaches à la John Cage and influences from hip-hop and pop culture—open, experimental, self-determined.
Special concert experiences throughout the school
In the air dome at Bacherplatz, bassist Robin Gadermaier invites you to a 1:1 concert—an intense, concentrated sound experience in direct exchange with just one listener at a time. The young band Hidden Gemz, whose sound oscillates between hip-hop, rock, and Viennese everyday poetry, can also be experienced live. The band formed in music class and is bringing in musical reinforcement for its performance: several school classes are actively participating.
Talk with personalities from education, politics, and the arts
The program will be accompanied by discussions under the motto “How do we want to live together?” with personalities from education, politics, and the arts. Participants include City Councilor for Culture Veronika Kaup-Hasler, politician Ursula Berner, Professor Axel Petri-Preis, and Ilkay Idiskut, known from the film Favoriten.
Funded as part of the “Kunst ist Klasse!” program by the OeAD – Agency for Education and Internationalization, the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media, and Sport, the Cultural Department of the City of Vienna (MA7), and the Margareten District Council.
